Like many another parent/grandparent in this country I have been following the case of missing Madeleine in the Telegraph newspaper and also on the internet and TV. The latest development whereby the parents Gerry and Kate McCann have been made suspects, has horrified me. I am sorry to have to say it but the Portuguese Police seem to have been totally incompetent, and the "evidence" on which they are accusing the McCanns, if the reports in the papers are to be believed, is flimsy at best and ludicrous in the extreme. To suggest that Kate McCann killed her daughter, hid the body [so well that the Portuguese sniffer dogs did not find it], calmly went for a meal with friends, and later when the focus of an intense media scrutiny was on her, and five weeks after the event, managed to transfer the body into the hired car and then dispose of it would be laughable were it not so tragic. To say the very least an unburied body left anywhere in such a hot climate would be giving off a powerful aroma after five weeks. Someone surely would have noticed?

If it is true that Kate was offered a deal by the Portuguese Police to say that she had killed Madeleine by accident and in return would have a 2 year sentence imposed, then I suggest the Police force over there is corrupt beyond belief.

I appreciate that a crime committed on another country's territory should, and usually is, investigated by that country. But in this particular case the incompetence and possible corruption should not be allowed to pass un-noticed. Is it not possible for pressure to be brought on the government to do something to assist the McCanns? Surely if one cannot look to the government of one's own country when one is in crisis in a foreign place, then to whom can one look?

Madeleine has been missing for four months now. The Portuguese Police have said they have been watching the parents since day one, despite issuing regular denials that they are suspect, stating they were "witnesses and victims". If they have been watching the McCanns so closely, exactly how much looking have they done for Madeleine? If she was indeed taken from the apartment by an intruder, how much effort has gone in to trying to find this person? By the time the Portuguese border was closed Madeleine could have been anywhere in Europe or beyond.

This case has brought into the open the sad state of affairs which exists regarding children who go missing. Gerry McCann has gone on record as saying that a common law and common procedures should pertain in all countries regarding this, and especially in the EU with it's now open borders.

Would you be able to bring this issue to the attention of someone who is able and willing to do something to assist the McCanns in their desperate search for their daughter please? Surely there must be some diplomatic way of putting pressure on the Portuguese Government to have this investigated in a proper manner?
